Get ready for ELD regulations with iTrack
Posted on: 2017-11-17
US federal government regulation known as ELD (Electronic Logging Device) Final Rule goes into effect on December 18, 2017. It means that commercial fleets will be required to have ELD on board or continue operating with AOBRDS (Automatic On-Board Recording Devices) by the end of 2017. However, even the last-mentioned will be legitimate until December 16, 2019. After that, all vehicles will have to move to ELD, anyway.
The FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) that is an initiator of the rule, has estimated that compulsive ELD will save 26 lives and prevent over 1,800 vehicle crashes annually. Sure, it's worth it.
We have already received a lot of partners requests on behalf of their clients who have already taken an advantage of connecting their commercial motor vehicles to certified ELDs. And we assured them that all the ELD systems can be integrated into iTrack to have all needed apps at one place. We'll show how to implement it at the second part of the article.
ELD and its benefits
An Electronic Logging Device is a technology used by drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) to automatically record driving time and Hours-of-Service (HOS). It also captures data on the vehicle's engine, movement, and miles driven.
ELD technology consists of two parts: a hardware - device (wired or dongle e.g. ATrack AX9) and a software (e.g. certified Gorilla Safety, WirelessLinks) - app that collects data via Bluetooth or USB and visualize it on smartphone, tablet or PC. The application is also synchronized with some fleet management software that allows monitor the data in real time.
Some of the major benefits of ELDs
- Increase driver safety and save lives - HOS compliance prevents fatigued drivers from getting behind the wheel;
- Automated Recording of Duty Status - By automatically recording duty status for drivers, HOS compliance can be improved;
- More drive time - Drivers no longer have to fill out and submit paper RODS (Records Of Duty Status);
- Less administration - Office staff no longer have to process paper RODS;
- Lower paper costs - Paper logbooks are no longer necessary.
How to use ELD services with iTrack
As we can see, GPS tracking service for the most part includes all the functionality (even more: e.g. real time monitoring, alerts, reports and more) that ELD services have. However, ELD is a specific system that must be certified. So, let these two systems work together like interrelated to each other.
Currently, iTrack has a lot of users who have already integrated ELD service into GPS tracking system, they just inserted ELD app into. That's how it looks.
You can see an extra ELD app icon under the main ones: Tracking, Reports, Tasks and Fleet. If you click it, the ELD interface will show up but you are still in the GPS tracking system.

Thus, after integrating the ELD system into iTrack your customers will be able to track and monitor all your assets' activity and operate with certified ELD service at the single interface.
If your customer decided to add ELD app to iTrack, just contact our sales managers or technical support and provide the following information:
- The app icon and name
- URL-address, where the application is located
- PAAS ID (or user ID)
By the way, according to the instructions above your clients can integrate any app they want to the GPS tracking system to scale up the functionality. Here you can find more details on this. And once again, if you have any questions, please contact our specialists and they will be glad to help you.
